Bassirou Dieng, known as Diego, was born in Saint Louis, Senegal, on 19th January 1957.
In his rich and various professional activity he has been also sociologist, entertainer, film maker, actor and also music producer.Today he focuses his life mainly on painting, in Dakar. He is a completely self taught artist, and does not belong to any school or artistic movement. However, he loves watching other artist's works and showing his own works too. From 1995 he decided to try to be a full-time artist, like a challenge with himself. In his canvas he tends to express more ideas at the same time.
There is nothing obvious, according to Diego, that is not worth to be considered.
If we look deeply we can see that his head series, these heads are slippers instead. Sometimes he recovers tie or t-shirt. His canvases often contain a recurrent message, almost a leitmotiv.
The space plays a very important role in his compositions; it is a controlled space where figures seems slaves. Actually he works on mark, not to create a new alphabet, but to give life to cryptic and harmonic elements. Even if composed by lively colors, Diego's canvases have blurred tonality, sometimes more explicit, sometimes less.
He works mainly on canvas and on paper, with acrylic. He lives and travels between Dakar and Paris with the only aim of painting..
Within his most important exhibitions we can remember: the personal exhibition in November 2005 in Utrecht, Holland; participation in the 2005 Beijing Biennale in October; Dakar Biennale in May 2004; a collective exhibition of artists from Senegal, Cambrais, May 2003; a personal exhibition at the Mairie du XIII Arrondisement, Paris, March 2002 and at the Mairie of XIX in November 2002; Open Doors of Goutte d'Oroin Paris, June 1997 and 1998.
